Neoprene Wellies
Wellies (also known as wellington boots) are a type of boot based upon leather Hessian boots. They were worn and popularised by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.
Wellington boots general main characteristics are being waterproof and also being made of rubber. There general use is to protect the wearer from very heavy rain, muddy ground and shallow standing water.
Sir Arthur Wellesley instructed his shoe maker Hoby of St. James's Street, London, to modify an 18th-century Hessian boot to make the boot more practical by lowering the heel, removing trim, and making them lower in height to midway along the calf.
It was not until 1853 that wellington boots were made of rubber (previous to this they were made of leather) with the invention of vulcanized rubber in 1852.
In World War 1 a total of 1,185,036 pairs of wellies were made to meet the British Army's demands. By the end of the 2nd World War the wellington boot was popular among men woman and children for any wet weather event.
The classic Green Wellies (arguably most depicted modern wellies) were first released in 1955 by Hunters.
Neoprene was invented in 1930 y DuPont scientists, it is a synthetic rubber with good flexibility in hot and cold conditions. A foamed neoprene containing gas cells can be used as an insulation material and for ‘shock’ protection. Neoprene resists burning and corrosion better than hydrocarbon based rubbers.
